William Hill Sportsbook has been a household name for years over in Europe, and now brings their operation to the United States.

Wiliiam Hill differs from the other main US sportsbooks in DraftKings and FanDuel in that William Hill started as a sportsbook where as DraftKings and FanDuel were essentially technology companies given their starts in DFS (daily fantasy sports).

This distinction results in some key differences between William Hill and other sportsbooks.

Design

William Hill has a very simple and clean interface. Since their roots are in old school bookmaking, the website and app aren’t really the foundation of their company.

Despite that, William Hill recently overhauled their website and app to bring it closer to modern day standards.

William Hill’s website and app styles mirror each other, which is nice to have a consistent experience across devices. They generally take a “no frills” approach to presenting betting options, with primarily just the facts in a text based format.

Layout

The home page presents you with what William Hill deems their most popular bets. Like other competitors, the default layout shows the three main betting markets: point spread, moneyline, and total.

When selecting a league, you can view three different bet types: upcoming, in play, and futures. As you can see, the design is very straightforward which makes it easy to navigate around the site and app.

Navigation

William Hill NavigationThe navigation features in play betting, promotions, as well as the leagues available.

The promotions tab is a nice resource to check before betting as they may be running a promotion on something you were planning to bet.

The navigation also features your bet slip (bets you have queued up but not yet submitted) as well as your open bets (bets that have been placed but not settled).

Bet Slip

The bet slip allows you to see all of the bets you are planning to make before you submit them.

When adding a bet to your bet slip, they offer a nice feature that can save your stake amount and set it as a default for future bets.

Viewing all of your bets in your bet slip also allows you to alter your bets. William Hill gives you the option of creating parlays out of your straight bets or buying points on your spread bets.

Betrivers sign up offer

William Hill will also alert you if the odds on one of your bets in your bet slip has changed.

Once you have placed your bets, you will find them in the Open Bets tab. Here you can see all of your unsettled bets in one place, including futures bets.

On this screen you will also be able to “cash out” of certain bets for games that are in play. Note that William Hill does not offer this for every type of bet and game.

App

The William Hill app was recently overhauled and it was much needed. On the app front, William Hill is playing catch up to its’ biggest competitors: DraftKings and FanDuel. Despite that, William Hill has opted for simplicity and functionality over bells and whistles.

App Layout

The William Hill app layout mirrors the web very closely. You can see that the navigation and tabs are consistent so you should feel right at home switching between devices

The event list view, like the home page, is very similar to what you will find on web. Just a simple list of events with spread/moneyline/total bets:

After clicking into a matchup, you will again see the standard markets along with the options for alternative and prop bet markets along the top navigation bar:

In the example above, you can see that there are half, quarter, alternate and other prop bet lines available. William Hill doesn’t go quite as crazy as some other competitors (looking at you, PointsBet), but there are enough to keep you interested.

App Reviews and Testimonials

William Hill iOS App Reviews

Most helpful iOS review (3 stars from samson247): “Good UI, lots of selection. I love the idea of In-play but they make it super hard. The order of games in the app moves around so you are scrolling up and down just to find the game you want.”

Most favorable iOS review (5 stars from Waldo Montaya): “There are so man In Play options from tennis to WNBA to international soccer. Easy interface and expansive menu.”

Most critical iOS review (1 star from Jefro88): “Glitchy right off the bat. Won’t let me take the photo of the back of my ID, just keeps focusing and never taking the photo. Guess I’ll just go down to the local sportsbook.”

William Hill Android App Reviews

Most favorable Android review (5 stars from Chris Oldroyd): “I think this is the best app of the leading bookmakers, the only time it lets itself down is when I do a btts and the matches in each division are not listed alphabetically.”

Most critical Android review (1 star from Pat Sharry): “Constant buffering, but don’t know if it’s my network provider or if William Hill’s server is slow at peak times as I’m able to connect Ebay, Facebook etc instantly. So I’m thinking of opening accounts with other online betting companies.”

William Hill App Special Features

William Hill allows you to set limits at multiple levels:

  • Account Deposit Limit – You can place a daily, weekly, or monthly limit on how much you are able ot deposit into your account
  • Betting Limit – A daily/weekly/monthly limit on how much you are able to wager

Odds

William Hill has some of the more competitive odds in the industry, depending on what markets you are betting.

Taking a sample of moneylines from each of the professional sports leagues, William Hill had one of the lowest holds of any sportsbook:

William Hill odds comparison

Given William Hill’s background is in traditional brick and mortar sportsbooks, it should come as no surprise that they offer some of the most competitive odds.

The reason William Hill needs the last 4 digits of you social security is to verify your identity in case you win enough that you would need to pay taxes.

Besides that, sign up is very straight forward and quick.

Stability

Unlike some competitors, William Hill has not had reports of widespread downtime.
Some users have reported issues with certain parts of the site or app.

William Hill overhauled their entire site recently, so some hiccups in the short term are expected.
