Is Sports Betting Legal in Pennsylvania?
Yes, sports betting is legal in Pennsylvania. After the Supreme Court struck down PASPA laws in May 2018, it gave way to legal sports betting. Pennsylvania legalized retail sports betting in November 2018 and mobile online sports betting in May 2019.

With sports betting legalization, casinos are required by the PGCB (Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board) to pay a $10 million license fee to offer sports betting. While this fee may seem high, casinos are willing to shell it out in hopes of attracting a large customer base from the start.
Taxes on sports betting in Pennsylvania are set at a lofty 36%. These taxes only apply to operators, however higher taxes will almost always result in higher prices for customers. This tax rate is significantly higher than New Jersey’s 8.5% tax on retail bets and 13% tax on internet bets.
How to bet on sports in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania is one of only a handful of states to have fully legalized both retail (casino) and mobile sports betting. This means that you can either physically go into a sportsbook and place a bet, or use your phone/computer to place a bet online.
The list of mobile sports betting operators will likely increase significantly once the first sportsbooks get up and running. New Jersey has seen over 80% of their handle come from mobile, so Pennsylvania has a lot to look forward to. While the list of mobile operators is small (for now), there are many retail sports betting options currently out there.
Pennsylvania Sports Betting Apps
Because Pennsylvania legalized mobile sports betting in late May 2019, there are only a few operators up and running at this point. We will be sure to keep this list updated as operators are added.
SugarHouse
Play SugarHouse was the first sportsbook to launch mobile betting in Pennsylvania on May 28th, 2019. SugarHouse also owns two casinos in the state, so being the first operator with a sportsbook isn’t too surprising.
